AUDITIONS - UNL Jazz Ensembles/Combos

SPRING 2018 JAZZ AUDITIONS

Monday January 8 from 5:30pm-8:30pm in room 119
Auditions will be held for students interested in joining the UNL Big Band for the following positions:TRUMPET 1, TRUMPET 2, PIANO, TROMBONE 1, and BASS TROMBONE (trombone 4). 

Students who are interested in joining a jazz combo and are not already participating in one during the fall semester are also encouraged to audition at this time.
A signup sheet will be posted on the jazz board in front of room 205. Please make sure to fill out a jazz audition information sheet and bring it to your audition (available online).

Horn Players (saxes, trumpets, trombones)
-Perform the melody to “Blues for Alice” (pdf online) with play-along, quarter note = 160 *Improvise 1-2 choruses on the tune (required for all combo auditions, optional for big band auditions)


-Trumpet 1: also prepare lead trumpet audition “From a Tip” (PDF excerpt online)


-Trombone 1: also prepare lead trombone audition “From a Tip” (PDF excerpt online)


-Bass Trombone: also prepare bass trombone audition “From a Tip” (PDF excerpt online)


*Combo auditions only: Also improvise on Bb or F blues

Piano/Guitar
-Perform the melody to “Blues for Alice” (pdf online) with play-along, quarter note = 160


-Comp 2 choruses of the tune


-Improvise 1-2 choruses on the tune (required for all combo auditions, optional for big band auditions)

Bass
-Perform the melody to “Blues for Alice” (pdf online) with play-along, quarter note = 160


-Walk 2 choruses of the tune


-Improvise 1-2 choruses on the tune (required for all combo auditions, optional for big band auditions)

Drums
- Drummers should also perform the following styles 1. Medium-tempo swing (quarter note =120), 2. Up-tempo swing (quarter note = 220+), 3. Samba (half note = 100), 4. Afro-Cuban 12/8 (dotted quarter = 120), 5. Bossa Nova (quarter note = 130) 6. Funk (quarter note = 90)

- Please note: Each style should be performed trading four bars of time, followed by four bars of solo. Each style demonstration should be 32 bars total with the exception of the Up-tempo swing which should be 64 bars using 8 bars of time followed by 8 bars of solo.

Vocalist
-Prepare a jazz standard or your choice (decide upon what key you are comfortable singing, we will use iReal pro accompaniment)


-Sing one chorus of melody, one chorus of scat singing improvisation
