15th Annual Midwest Clarifest
Hosted by Dr. Diane Barger, UNL Professor of Clarinet.
Featuring guest artists Denise Gainey, University of Alabama-Birmingham and Peter Wright, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. And special guest: Cynthia Nichols, University of Nebraska Omaha
ELIGIBILITY
All clarinetists of middle school through college age are invited to participate. Clarinetists and band directors who teach privately or in the public schools are welcome to participate along with their students.
LOCATION
The School of Music, located on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus, is sponsoring all activities. All activities will take place in the Kimball Recital Hall, 11th & R Streets on the UNL Campus.
REGISTRATION FEE
$10 (includes boxed lunch), payable by check only to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
MASTER CLASS
Students interested in playing in the master classes should have permission from their private teacher or band director. Be sure to fill in the necessary information on the registration form and send your materials in early to be given first consideration.
NEBRASKA ALL STATE ETUDE SESSIONS
Nebraska high school students are welcome to join us for a session on the new Nebraska All State etudes! There will be a session for bass clarinetists and one for B-flat soprano clarinetists. Clinicians include Diane Barger and Cynthia Nichols for the soprano clarinet etudes and UNL Hixson-Lied Fellow, Richard Viglucci, for the bass clarinet etudes.
HOUSING/MEALS
Teachers and/or parents will be responsible for chaperoning their own students who wish to find hotel accommodations. You are responsible for the cost dinner. There are several eating establishments within walking distance. The registration fee will provide a boxed lunch for all participants. If you have any dietary requests (i.e.: vegetarian, vegan), please notify us.

Dr. Denise Gainey is Associate Professor of Clarinet and Instrumental Music Education and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a Leblanc Artist/Clinican, and an Educational Recording Artist for Carl Fischer Music. Gainey is the State Representative of Alabama for the International Clarinet Association and serves as the State Chair Coordinator for the ICA. Dr. Gainey’s major teachers include Kalmen Opperman, James Gillespie, Frank Kowalsky, and Fred Ormand. |

Peter Wright is principal clarinet of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (since 1975) and is a frequent soloist, having performed numerous solo recitals throughout the southeastern United States and Canada. He attended Jacksonville University where he received a Bachelor of Music Education degree and the Eastman School of Music where he received the Master of Music degree. He currently teaches clarinet |

Cynthia Nichols is in her tenth year as Artist Faculty/Instructor of Clarinet at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she also teaches Woodwind Pedagogy. Originally from the suburban Chicago area, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and a Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. |
