Dr. Alan F. Mattingly is Associate Professor of Horn at the University of Nebraska, where he teaches the applied horn studio, conducts the Husker Horn Choir, and performs with the Moran Woodwind Quintet and the Faculty Brass Quintet.  Prior to his appointment at UNL, Mattingly was the horn professor at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, where he performed with the Smoky Mountain Brass quintet and was principal horn with the Spartanburg (SC) Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hendersonville Symphony, and associate principal/third horn with the Asheville (NC) Symphony Orchestra.  Other orchestral engagements include the Albany (GA) Symphony, the Tallahassee (FL) Symphony Orchestra, and the Paducah (KY) Symphony Orchestra.

As a performer and clinician, Mattingly has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Wales, Russia, Australia, and the Czech Republic, with major performances at conventions of the International Horn Society, the International Trumpet Guild, the Spoleto Festival, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.  He currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the International Horn Competition of America, and held the position of Area Representative Coordinator for the International Horn Society from 2002-2009.  In May 2010 Mattingly traveled back to the Czech Republic to premier Juraj Filas' "Copernicus" with the Nebraska Faculty Brass Quintet.  They performed the work again in January 2011 with The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, DC.

Mattingly’s students consistently perform well at horn competitions, and many have gone on to win orchestral positions and teaching positions.  Others students have been accepted into top graduate music programs nationally.

Mattingly received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Alabama and his Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees from Florida State University, where his principal teachers were Charles Snead and William Capps, respectively.
